you. jon: we still have debt deadlock on capitol hill with the default deadline just eight days away now. congressional leaders are still struggling to hammer out some kind of a deal, one that would raise the limit on our nation's credit card while cutting trillions of dollars in spending. house speaker john boehner may unveil his own bill today. harry reid said it would be a nonstarter. wendell goler is live on the north lawn with more. >> reporter: speaker boehner's plan would take the spending cuts agreed to before talks with vice joe biden broke down and raise the debt ceiling a little less than that. it would satisfy the speakers bottom line which is cutting spending more than the debt ceiling is raids but we'd have to go through this all over again by the end of the year. the speaker said yesterday it would solve the immediate crisis. >> there is going to be a two-stage process. it's not physically possible to do all of this in one step. having said that, chris, i know the president is worried about his next election, but my god shouldn't we be worried about the country? >> rep

to an increased risk of suicidal thoughts and now to a higher risk of heart disease we asked dr. jon lapook to tell us what we need to know about these new findings. >> reporter: today's study is worrisome news for the more than seven million americans who have taken chantix. a new analysis links the pill to a 72% increase in the risk of heart problems. johns hopkins dr. sonal singh led the research. >> it is causing the same problems we are trying to prevent, that's why it's not worth the risk. we need to prevent cardiac disease among smokers, not increase it. >> reporter: the review involves more than 8,000 patients. while a 72% increased risk sounds alarming, a companion editorial entitled "is it a heart breaker?" notice that heart problems are still rare, occurring in only about 1% of patients taking chantix. the drug maker pfizer questions the way the analysis was conducted. dr. gail walk well is vice president of medical affairs for pfizer. >> we will continue to do a more in-depth look as the f.d.a. is asking us to do. to date we have not seen evidence of important risks to the heart

of the rest of the pack. jon huntsman, we can mention, he also has a pretty big fund-raising hall for a guy that not a lot of people know about. $4 million. we should mention half of that, though, is money he kicked in himself. he is part of a very wealthy family that owns a chemical company out there in utah. so not too surprising there. one thing we can tell you this morning is that president obama's re-election campaign, they are very proud of the fact that they have a roughly $490,000 contributors who have donated so far to the president's campaign. that is a number that they are tweeting out and getting out today. that is way more than he had back in 2007. of course, not too surprising back then. he was sort of a long shot for the white house. speaking of presidential runs. we should mention that we are getting reports and we are expecting to see thad mccarter, a congressman from michigan. he is well known up in michigan and well known in tea party circles. he is expected to file his paper work today to run for president. mccotter plays the guitar. so we might see him out on the campai

,000,000.20000000 dollars, the next four candidates according to these figures, tim pawlenty, ron paul, jon pawlenty, ron paul, jon huntsman, that does not even add up to 15 million. it is still seen as a slow money raising cycle? guest: because mitt romney had done the things that were necessary to get off to a fast start. relative to the rest of the field, however, when you look at this point in the 2008 cycle, mitt romney raised more than $20 million. rudy giuliani, $17 million. john mccain, the eventual nominee, $11 million. three big guns out front, competing against an open democratic field, we did not know that president obama's fund-raising operation would be the juggernaut that it turned out to be. at that point, with an unknown opponent, there was more fund- raising by individual candidates and folks using the gop nomination than we see at this point in a comparable cycle where we do know who the opponent is going to be. they know that money will be important and yet the numbers are substantially behind. it is disappointing. it has to be a letdown for the republican field. host: kenneth vogel w

their stump speeches and focusing on the early primary states. mitd romney and jon huntsman both ramping up in new hampshire, even marching in the same parade in amherst yesterday. they're focusing early energy there instead of iowa where the more conservative michele bachmann and newt gingrich spent their fourth of july. and they walked in the same parade, too, in crystal lake, iowa. >> the patriotism of the american people will rise to the occasion and overcome these challenges. >> we're going to spend a lot of time at the vfw halls talking about those who are part of the greatest generation, and guess what, there's also another greatest generation coming up in this country. >> together we make a team that can't be beat. >> let's bring in our company, former governor ed rendell and editorial page editor for "the washington examiner," mark tapscott. gentlemen, good to see you. good morning. >> good morning. >> so the moderates are in new hampshire, the conservatives are in iowa. is it a coincidence, governor, or a strategy? >> no, it's a strategy. they'll meet in south carolina and florida

as well. tim pawlenty, 3%. jon huntsman, who has staked a lot of his campaign on winning new hampshire and had this big rollout with a lot of media coverage, only at 2% at this point. he is right there with herman cain and newt gingrich. surprising numbers there and very good numbers for mitt romney. we mentioned in that poll there, tim pawlenty, he also is not doing very well in that poll. he is hoping, obviously, to win iowa where is he staking all of his campaign and brought what is basically a pretty good political young gun on his squad, sarah huckabee sanders, the doubt of mike huckabee, who won the iowa caucuses back in 2008, she has joined his campaign. so you can say that tim pawlenty is looking for some huck luck. and sarah huckabee was a big part of the huckabee campaign and will be a big part of pawlenty's campaign. if pawlenty will do well in iowa, sarah huckabee will be a big bet to help him because right now, he needs all of the help he can get. >> jim acosta, thanks. your next political update in an hour. always get all of the political news 24/7 at cnn/politics.com. >>

the people vying for the president's jobber were also hard at work this weekend. former utah governor jon huntsman barn stormed in new hampshire, which hosts the nation's first primary. minnesota representative michele bachmann was out in full force in iowa, six weeks ahead of the state's straw poll. she is running neck and neck with presumed front runner mitt romney, according to a recent state poll, and this weekend she tried to build on that momentum. lesser known candidate businessman herman cain, also tried to shore up support in the hawk why state, stumping at a godfather pizza, the company he used to run. the seoul african-american gop candidate recently released this video touting his tea party credentials. >> i was in a tea party before it was cool. >> reporter: in ohio over the weekend, cain said he's gaining traction. >> if you average out all of the polls that i'm in third place behind mitt romney and michele bachmann, and they have twice the name id, i think i have the ball because as my name iid spreads, i have nowhere to go but up. >> even former president bill clinton is w
, that is where the numbers fall right off of a cliff. tim pawlenty, and ron paul, and jon huntsman all coming in under $5 million. pawlenty in fact is seeing the fund-raising numbers closer to herman cain's than mitt comeny's, but newt gingrich is going in the wrong direction, because he is reported to be $1 million in debt. and as for barack obama, they are saying that his is certain to meet the goals when the forms are filed next week. obama officials say they have nearly 500,000 individual donors give this quarter which is nearly five times the number that the bush/cheney re-election bid began with in 2003. now, into the money chase with "huffington post" social impact reporter, and analyst alex wagner. alex, the republicanings knew they would be outspent by president obama, and are they prepared to be this outspent by obama? >> no, this is not good news. that internal memo, romney had set a $50 million goal, and the fact that she is not meeting the 2007 numbers is ugly, and you compare it with the fact that there are predictions that the obama campaign will make $1 billion in fund-raising
tim pawlenty and jon huntsman are barely hanging on. and newt gingrich's campaign is on life support. so is this it? or is michele bachmann emerging as the tea party's battering ram against the willard mitt romney? joining me now is richard wolfe and with me, editor at large for salon.com, joan walsh. let me ask you first. is the bachmann threat a real threat, richard? >> well, she is a threat herself to mitt romney. but i actually think the space that she represents is more of a threat. look, she needs to call donald trump to figure out how this movie ends. can you rise very quickly on this kind of platform and then you sink very quickly. but what she is showing and what trump showed before her is that there is space for a populist insurgeant type of tea party candidate who can capture the spirit driving the base here. i personally don't think it will be her. i think it is going to be someone like rick perry or sarah palin but she is peaking too early. the one thing you don't do is too early in the summer before. >> are they waiting joan for another tea party hero to come from the w
